A lawn tractor that won't start is frustrating — especially when your yard is waiting. Before you haul it to a shop (or give up on it entirely), here's exactly what we check when we show up for a mobile repair call in Clermont, FL.
Old gas is the #1 cause of no-start issues on lawn tractors in Florida. Ethanol-blended gas (regular pump gas) degrades in 30 days and leaves a sticky varnish that clogs everything downstream. We check:
If the gas is old, we drain it completely and refill with fresh ethanol-free gas. You'd be surprised how often that alone gets it running.
"On a recent job, we worked through almost everything on a tractor that hadn't run in years — carburetor, throttle, pistons, battery, fuel lines. We added fresh ethanol-free gas and it would crank but not stay running. Couldn't get fuel through the lines. Changed the fuel filter and it started right up. $10 part. That's the job."
The fuel filter is cheap and often overlooked. Old filters get clogged with sediment and varnish, starving the engine of fuel. We always check it early in our diagnostic process now.
If fuel is getting through but the engine won't stay running, the carburetor is usually the culprit. Old gas leaves varnish deposits that clog the tiny jets inside the carb. We disassemble and clean it with carburetor cleaner — in most cases a rebuild kit isn't needed.
Riding tractors use a battery to crank the engine. Florida heat destroys batteries — especially ones that sit discharged for months. We test voltage and load. If it can't hold a charge, it gets replaced.
A fouled or worn spark plug won't ignite the fuel mixture. We pull it, inspect it, and replace it if needed. It's a $5 part that can make the difference between starting and not.
Riding tractors have safety switches on the seat, the blade engagement, and sometimes the brake pedal. These switches prevent starting if they think you're in an unsafe position. A faulty switch can mimic a no-start condition. We test each one.
No need to haul your tractor anywhere. Call or text (321) 430-5999 and we'll come to your driveway and work through it step by step — just like we described above.
We come to your home, office, or anywhere you are — cars, trucks, lawn mowers, generators and more.
